¡¡

The Society for Cultural Interaction in East Asia will hold its fourth annual meeting,

hosted by the Center for Japanese Studies at Korea University.

¡¡

      Up to the present,

research in the humanities in Asia has pursued a vision modeled on the humanities in the West,

with its focus on individual nations.

¡¡

However, in the present age of globalization,

we need to extricate ourselves from this model and construct a new paradigm.

¡¡

Society needs more than just academic contribution; it needs scholarship that will benefit humankind.

¡¡

With this as background, at this year¡¯s annual meeting

we will discuss the East Asian experience as it relates to the theme of disasters,

although it will not be limited to natural disasters.

¡¡

Rather, we will seek to examine anticipated problems, as well as present problems,

from the multidisciplinary perspective of the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences.

¡¡

At the same time, we will continue to examine various aspects of East Asian cultural interaction.

¡¡

In view of the outcome of our previous annual meeting,

we anticipate an exchange of earnest discussion that will not only benefit East Asian scholarly circles

but also prove useful for the future of humankind.

¡¡

We invite you to participate in the meeting and would be most honored by your presence.
